The Next Generation of Urban Transportation

When Pittsburgh was selected to be a finalist in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Smart City Challenge, Mayor Bill Peduto needed to build a winning team to create a 75-page application and video outlining a vision for Pittsburgh’s transportation infrastructure and a video telling the story of Pittsburgh’s history of innovation. He came to MAYA to bring a wholistic, forward-looking transportation strategy to life and position Pittsburgh as a model connected city for all its citizens.

Aligning a Vision for an Innovative Future

We facilitated an initial planning session with a team of Pittsburgh leaders to create alignment around a purpose, mission, and vision for the SmartPGH application. This work session enabled us to craft a narrative together based on the ideas from the session, allowing us to leverage a progressive, technology-driven transportation initiative while telling Pittsburgh’s story of a city deeply rooted in innovation.

“If It’s Not for All, It’s Not for Us.”

The final product was SmartPGH, a fully branded website, video , and logo that told the story of Pittsburgh’s plan to embrace technology for a safer, more reliable transit system. By alluding to Pittsburgh’s innovative past, SmartPGH delivered a vision for the City’s future with the inclusive theme: “If it’s not for all, it’s not for us”.

After SmartPGH was presented in front of a national audience at USDOT, it was commended for its compelling vision and storytelling. Although Pittsburgh did not win the Smart City Challenge, SmartPGH is being used as a tool to push forward the infrastructure initiatives included in the application—and later inspired the Resilient Pittsburgh initiative as a way to put the vision established by SmartPGH into action.
